A-Cross The Street is a mobile application developed during Santa Clara University's Hack for Humanity 2023, a social-good hackathon. The project was designed to help uninsured Oakland residents navigate insurance options and find accessible healthcare resources.
The experience organizes healthcare support around two needs: finding insurance and finding care available without insurance.
Healthcare information can be difficult to navigate when users don't know which programs they qualify for or where they can receive affordable care.
Rather than presenting users with a collection for disconnected resources, we wanted A-Cross The Street to guide them toward information relevant to their situation.
We organized the app around an initial assessment that establishes the user's language preference and determines what kind of help they need.
Looking for insurance?
Users can explore whether Medi-Cal may be an option and, if not, continue toward Covered California.
Looking for care?
Users can explore clinics and hospitals offering free or reduced-cost services based on their needs.
The project plan specifically describes this branching structure and the intended clinic search by needs such as pediatrics, mental health services, and general medicine.
We also considered accessibility in how users entered and navigated the experience. The initial flow included multiple language options so users could choose the language they were most comfortable using.
The implementation included English, French, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Korean.
My contribution focused on front-end implementation.
I developed portions of the application's interface in Repl.it using HTML and CSS. My teammates then adapted that work into React Native as we developed the mobile application.
This gave me experience translating interface ideas into working front-end code while collaborating with teammates responsible for the React Native implementation.
Our team had limited experience with JavaScript and even less experience with React Native, so we learned the technology while building the application.
Working under the constraints of a hackathon required us to learn quickly, divide responsibilities, troubleshoot implementation issues, and continuously adapt the product as we built it.
A-Cross The Street received the Best Hack by Women in Tech award at Hack for Humanity 2023.
